Purpose

This assignment focuses on:

  • developing computer games in MIT's Scratch
  • using effective skills and strategies for working collaboratively
  • paper prototyping and user interface design
  • using appropriate critical thinking skills and problem-solving techniques

This is a pair assignment. You may discuss the assignment only within your team or the instructor.

To prepare for this assignment:

Assignment

Develop a fun game using two elements from Scratch (or Snap!). If an element is a sprite, it is OK to have several instances (clones) of it - however, clones should have identical scripts (behavior).

Constraints are good - they help us focus on other aspects, such as the game idea and experience.

By "fun" we mean a game that an average person would be interested in playing for at least 10 mins. It may be a single-player game, or involve an opponent (or collaborator) - your choice.

You might try your game with sample users - ask your friends to help you. Be ready to listen - see Ch. 1! Be open to making substantial changes to what you have. The more useful feedback you get early and often, the better your final product will be.

Details

Submit the following a typed, one-page paper (PDF) describing your game. Include the following:

  • Your names, course, assignment no., date
  • Name of the game
  • Idea/objective of the game
  • Object(s) used
  • Rules of the game
  • A paper prototype snapshot (from a sample game, or for demonstrating how to play the game - explain, in the photo caption)
  • How to calculate score

Aim for simplicity and elegance.

Submission

  1. You will submit your assignment on OAKS, by the due date.
  2. Also, bring a printout at the beginning of class, on the due date.

Grading

Your grade will be based on how well you followed the above instructions, and the depth/quality of your work.
