This assignment focuses on:
- the importance of being curious and becoming a self-learner for college success;
- developing knowledge-gathering techniques and research skills;
- gaining experience with use of academic resources and student support services, including the library and information technology; and
- using appropriate critical thinking skills and problem-solving techniques.
This is an individual assignment. You must work on your own (but you may talk to the instructor and/or a librarian).
- Take the plagiarism tutorial. (This should take about 10 minutes.)
- Pick one of the topics identified in class.
- Find one journal article related to this topic - something interesting you would like us to possibly read during the semester. It should have a reference/bibliography section at the end. (Finding an interesting research topic is an important skill for college success).
- Look through our Library resources (start with Academic Search Premier).
- Do NOT use Wikipedia articles or other Internet-only articles.
- Write a summary of why you thought this article was interesting/important, and what have you learned from reading it (100-200 words). I do not expect you to fully understand the article. (Note: Some articles are easier to read than others, so select your article well.)
- Write 2-3 questions you have from reading the article.
- Create a bibliography with six items.
- The first item should be the original article.
- Look at the references at the end this article, and highlight two references that you find interesting and think that they may help you better understand what the article is about. Add those two references to your bibliography.
- Add three more references related to this topic, which you think may help you better understand what the article is about. Those articles should not be listed in the references of the original article.
- Here is an example of such a bibliography (use this format):

- Make a printout of the original article, and highlight interesting passages. Write comments and questions on the margins. Also, highlight the two references you selected to include in your bibliography.
- You will submit a printout of your assignment at the beginning of class on the due date.
- You should use MS Word or Google docs to type up your document and format it appropriately.
- Submit a printout of your document. The document should contain:
- Your name, class, date, etc. at the top
- The title of the article you found.
- The summary of why you thought this article was important and what have you learned from reading it (100-200 words). Again, I do not expect you to fully understand the article (but you should be able to understand some of it).
- Two to three questions you have from reading the article.
- The bibliography with six items (as described above).
- Attach a printout of the original article (highlighted as described above).
Your grade will be based on how well you followed the above instructions and the depth/quality of your work (e.g., explanation, questions, etc.).
