Advising

Quality advising and mentoring are vital to you, your CS faculty and your future industry employers or graduate schools. While advising and mentoring can happen at many times and places during your time at the College of Charleston, the CS department also engages in a two week window of time for advising during each of the spring and fall semesters.

General Information
Appointments typically last for at least 20 minutes, but consider a longer appointment to talk more broadly about your educational and career goals. In addition to planning courses for the fall semester, ask your advisor:

  • What are my degree options?
  • Is a research project possible? (paid, bachelor's essay, etc)
  • Do I want an internship as another way to learn? (so many opportunities)
  • How easy is study abroad? (Italy - in computer science - in English)
  • Should I consider graduate school? (GRE, options for study, preparation)

How to Prepare & What to Bring
Here are a few tips to help you make the best of your Advising session:

  • Show up for your appointment and be on time.
  • Come to your advising appointment prepared.
    • Bring a printout of your degree audit.
    • Bring a list of potential courses for the next semester and beyond.
  • Communicate clearly with your advisor.
  • Most importantly, build a relationship.

Registration Holds
Before you have completed an advising session, a registration hold will be placed on your account. In order to sign up for courses, you must either meet with your advisor as most students do, or fill out a "Refusal of Student Advising" form. This form is available in the Computer Science office, JC Long room 216.

Changing Advisors
If you want to change your advisor, send an email to Kristi Kratzer (kratzerkn@cofc.edu) with the name of your new advisor you are requesting. Available advisors for majors and minors in computer science and computer information systems are Professors Anderson, Boetje, Leclerc, Manaris, McCauley, Pothering, Starr and Stalvey. Dr. Starr also advises Discovery Informatics Majors. There are no hard feelings if you change advisors! Find someone YOU can connect and work with.

Declaring a Leave of Absence
If you do not plan to take classes in the fall because you are taking some time off, you still should be advised so that you can properly declare a leave-of-absence from the College. Study abroad does not constitute a leave-of-absence.
